During a dental cleaning, you’ll have a short dental exam, and one of our Registered Dental Hygienists will perform the following:
- Remove plaque from your teeth. Plaque is an almost invisible film that’s sticky and forms on the teeth. Plaque is a colony of bacteria, saliva and food debris that is constantly growing. This bacteria produces toxins that cause gum inflammation, which is the start of gum disease (periodontal disease).
- Remove tartar, which is also known as calculus. Tartar is plaque that has hardened and that has been left on the tooth for some time. It is firmly attached to the surface of the tooth, and forms above and below the gum line. It can only be removed with special dental instruments.
- Polish your teeth to remove the stain and plaque that brushing your teeth and scaling doesn’t remove.
